Miner & Background Capture
The Miner agent for process logs and conformance, and Background Capture — the Chrome extension's always-on, plain-English activity trail with its privacy model.
If Miner (Beta) is visible in the Agents section of your sidebar, it's for bringing process log data into Linc — event logs, integrations, process apps, and conformance views. Architect is where that evidence comes together with interviews and documents for analysis and planning.
Background Capture
Background Capture is a long-running mode of the Linc Chrome extension. Once you allowlist the apps you want to study, the extension quietly records a plain-English trail of how you work in those tools over days and weeks. That activity syncs into the Miner, where Linc builds a picture of how a process is really performed — not just how someone describes it once.
How it differs from a Scout recording:
- Scout recording: one deliberate session, one workflow, video plus narration, captured on demand.
- Background Capture: always-on, no narration, a plain-English event trail mined across many real runs — which is what surfaces the variants, exceptions, and workarounds a one-off recording can miss.
The two are complementary: Background Capture shows how often and how many ways a process runs in the wild; Scout interviews capture the intent and reasoning behind it.
The privacy model
Background Capture records intent, never content. The extension synthesizes a short human sentence for each action, like "Clicked Approve" or "Navigated to Requisitions":
- Plain-English only — no pixels, no screenshots, no raw page content.
- No keystrokes — the extension attaches no keyboard listeners.
- No field values — anything you type into an input is ignored; control labels (a button caption, a menu name) are treated as intent.
- You choose the apps — capture runs only on the sites in your allowlist, and a listed site covers that domain and its subdomains (adding an ERP's domain also covers its payroll and HR subdomains). Every unlisted site is ignored — unless you deliberately switch on "Allow all sites" (below), which captures on every site and ignores the allowlist.
- Query strings are stripped — captured URLs keep only the origin and path.
Your events are private to you. Synced events are stored under your user account, and the Miner only ever returns your own captured events back to you — an administrator or teammate cannot browse another person's raw captured activity. You can review everything captured at any time from the extension and export it to CSV.
Enabling Background Capture
- Install and open the extension (see Installing the Chrome Extension). Click the Linc icon in your browser toolbar to open the popup.
- Log in to Linc. If you're already signed in to Linc in the browser, it connects automatically and shows your name and organization under Connection. If it shows "Not syncing", click "Log in to Linc". Capture keeps running locally while you're logged out, and queued events sync when you connect.
- Add the sites to capture. Under Domain allowlist, type a site (e.g. an ERP host) and click Add. Adding your first site turns capture on.
- Let it run. There's nothing to start per task — use your apps as normal, and events sync to the Miner on their own.
You can toggle an individual site off without removing it, remove a site, or Pause all capture — a timed pause resumes itself, an open-ended pause stays until you resume. The popup also has an "Allow all sites" switch ("Capture on every site and ignore the allowlist below") — turning it on also turns capture on, just as adding your first site does, so flip it only when you really mean to capture everywhere; turning it back off returns you to the allowlist and to whether capture was on before. If your organization uses Initiatives, a "Capturing under" picker in the Connection section attributes new events to one you belong to.
The on-page pill
Whenever capture is enabled on an allowlisted site, a small pill appears in the corner of the page so you always know it's being process-mined. Click the pill to see the recent actions captured on that site, Pause or Resume directly from it, or Minimize it to a small Linc logo — it's never fully removed, so you can always see that capture is active. If you're not signed in, the pill flags "Not syncing" with a log-in action.
In the Miner
Synced events appear under Browser Capture as a live, plain-English activity feed, with counts of total events, busiest apps, top actions, and the most recent 24 hours. Syncing is safe to retry and never produces duplicates. Inside the dashboard, "Suggest AI assists" asks the AI Mentor to read your top apps and recurring actions and suggest what you could hand off to an AI assistant today, each with setup steps and an estimate of time saved.
